What If We Focused on Ability?
Blue Star Recyclers began with a simple observation — and a powerful question.
In 2009, our founder was volunteering at a day program for adults with disabilities. As part of their daily activities, several participants were taking apart electronic equipment. Four of the five were on the autism spectrum, and they approached the work with focus, precision, and consistency.
Their abilities were clear. They had valuable, marketable skills.
So why weren’t they working?
That question became the foundation for Blue Star Recyclers.
One Solution. Two Urgent Challenges.
Blue Star was created to address two growing problems at once: the lack of meaningful employment opportunities for people with disabilities and the rapidly increasing amount of electronic waste entering our communities.
Today, we are a nonprofit social enterprise that recycles and refurbishes unwanted electronics while creating jobs for people with autism, other disabilities, and additional barriers to employment.
Every device that comes through our doors has the potential to create something valuable—a cleaner environment, a meaningful job, a stronger community, and a more inclusive economy.
Creating Jobs by Recognizing Strengths
One in four Americans lives with a disability, yet people with disabilities continue to experience extraordinarily high rates of unemployment and underemployment. For young adults with cognitive disabilities, finding a meaningful job can be especially difficult.
The problem is not a lack of talent.
Too often, traditional workplaces fail to recognize different ways of thinking, learning, communicating, and contributing.
At Blue Star, we focus on what people can do.
By matching people’s abilities with the right responsibilities and incorporating inclusive management practices, we have created a workplace where employees can succeed, develop, and grow.
Approximately 85% of Blue Star employees have a diagnosed disability. They earn competitive wages, build relationships, gain independence, and contribute their skills to work that matters.

Electronics contain valuable materials, but they can also contain hazardous substances. When devices are placed in the trash and sent to landfills, exposure to the elements can cause heavy metals and other contaminants to enter the surrounding environment.
Blue Star provides households, businesses, and community partners with a responsible alternative.
We safely recycle electronics, securely manage data-containing devices, and refurbish equipment whenever possible so that it can continue to be used. Our customers gain confidence that their materials are being managed responsibly and in accordance with applicable environmental and data-security standards.
But the impact goes far beyond responsible recycling.
The electronics our customers bring to us become fuel for a more inclusive economy.
Expanding the Impact
Our mission has remained constant since 2009, but the ways we pursue it continue to evolve.
In addition to providing electronics recycling and refurbishment services, Blue Star helps other recyclers, manufacturers, and employers adopt inclusive workforce practices. We share what we have learned, help organizations recognize overlooked talent, and connect people with disabilities to employment opportunities.
By expanding our model beyond our own facilities, we can create opportunities for far more people than Blue Star could employ alone.

The old way of thinking about unwanted electronics is simple: get rid of them as quickly and cheaply as possible.
We believe there is a better way.
